Weekly Update - September 14th

Our first full week of school for the 2018-2019 year is now in the books, and what an exciting week it was on so many accounts. Each Monday and Wednesday, the students will assist me in completing the blog entry. However, as I mentioned last week, I will be writing a more lengthy reflection of the week on Friday.

What learning took place this week?

The students worked on understanding the concept of YET this week. We read a picture book titled Giraffes Can’t Dance and discussed what skills (inside and outside the school setting) that each student had not mastered YET. Each and every student discussed openly what they couldn’t do YET and agreed that sharing with others was positive, and that we can all help each other change our can’t statements into can. We will continue to work on this concept throughout the school year. If you do hear your son/daughter say that can’t do something, be sure to add the YET to the end of that statement.

All students in the globe have the right to be safe, to be happy, and to learn. We reviewed exactly what a right means and then brainstormed several ideas on how we can ensure the student’s rights of Room 7 are met. The students have agreed to this such contract and will place their signature on the contract to show anyone who enters the classroom that they will behave in an appropriate manner to ensure everyone is safe, happy, and learns. Please check this contract out when you come next week for conferences.

Students did an amazing job brainstorming as many onomatopoeias in a two day period.  This learning task was the kick-off to our Hearing and Sound unit of study. The second part of this task was to assign emotions to each example to determine if the sound is considered to be pleasant or unpleasant. We also viewed a short video which tested the age of the student’s hearing. I have included the website below if you would like to check out how old your ears are?

I have registered our class for the Global Read Aloud. This initiative will begin on October 1st. Each class that registers selects a book from the short list provided and then connects with other classes, around the world, that are reading the same book. We can connect with as many classes in the world or just one, whichever our class decides together. We discussed the opportunity as a class on Thursday and then started further discussions on which book choice would be the most suitable for our class, not necessarily your favourite.  Each student completed a classroom survey and bar graph to represent the data they have collected. Please stayed tuned for more information on this wonderful global experience.

We will be heading out for our first field study on Monday, September 24th to TELUS Spark. Please contact me as soon as possible if you are able to volunteer that day. Thank you to those families who have already brought back the permission forms. These are due back at the school by Wednesday, September 19th.
