October 26th

Although a shorter week, it was still a busy one indeed. With the assembly now behind us, the students were able to take a breath and reflect on all the work they did leading up to the grand event. Once again, the students of Room 7 should be very proud of both their individual and group contributions.

What learning took place this week?

The highlight of the week may have been the midway point Book Club that was held on Thursday afternoon. As you are aware, all three of the grade 3 classrooms are reading the novel A Boy Called Bat. Each class has now read the first 13 chapters and what better way to discuss the events of those chapters with a book club. Students were grouped accordingly, a representative from each class, and asked to discuss and share their perspective on the novel thus far. Please ask your son/daughter about their perspective on the novel thus far. It was so interesting to hear each student express their thoughts and opinions. I can’t wait until the final book club discussion. Thank you to those parents who graciously brought in healthy snacks and drinks. It made the event even better.

Students have been working very hard on a pastel pumpkin piece. We first started our task on examining a fake pumpkin and what they noticed was different than a real pumpkin. We spoke about the colours of each and how the lines were straight vertical lines but when they were placed around a sphere-like object, they looked curved. . We then journeyed through a guided sketching lesson of three different sized pumpkins. Once this stage was complete, we used various chalk pastels to create realistic pumpkins. The students also learned about how shadows, size, positioning, and overlapping create the illusion of depth. The final pieces will look amazing so be prepared with a frame.

We continue to work on growing (increasing and decreasing) and repeating patterns in math. Students have also been working on a plan on how they will personally show their understanding of the Fibonacci sequence.

Upcoming Events…

*Friday, October 26th - Non-Instructional Day (no school)
*Tuesday, October 30th - Carburn Park Field Study (walking in afternoon)
*Friday, November 2nd - FUN Snack
*Sunday, November 4th - Change Clocks Back

Take care and have a wonderful weekend!

The students and I have been working tirelessly this week to prepare for our Grade 3 Team assembly. I will be the first to admit I didn’t have much hand in the planning of our portion of the assembly, which is the way it should be! The students took full charge and ownership of their part of the program. I couldn’t be more proud of the responsibility they all took on with open hands.

What learning took place this week?

The Studio Bell field study took place on Monday of this week. If you have not had the chance to visit this building, please do, because it is beautiful. I am not sure how much the students enjoyed climbing the endless amount of stairs (in their mind) but what they observed and were able to explore when they got to each level was well worth it. Students enhanced their understanding of hearing and sound through various exploration opportunities. Students were also provided with a more intimate session with a music expert. The expert spoke about pitch, volume, and how different instruments are sorted based on how one plays them. It was amazing to watch the students ‘play around’ with the different instruments available. Perhaps a student will want to explore the story of one of these instruments even further.

We have completed reading the first 10 chapters of A Boy Called Bat. The writing task this week was a persuasive one, where the students were asked to place themselves in the shoes of Bat. They were asked to brainstorm as many strong arguments as possible that one could make if attempting to convince a parent to keep a pet. Please ask your child about the arguments they thought were the strongest. We also had a Skype call with our buddy class in Clay Centre, Kansas. The students were able to meet their pen pal buddy face to face. Both classes of students were extremely excited. I hope to communicate with the Clay Centre class on a weekly basis to discuss the content of the novel. The last item we focused on this week was the concept of mindfulness. We discussed how this applies to the novel and of children with autism. Students were then asked to think of a time when they feel nervous, anxious, or uncomfortable. Then they thought of what they could do to help when feeling this way. As students shared their calming strategies with me, I jotted them on big chart paper. We spoke about how your strategy could help another and that we should be comfortable sharing our strategies. I hope that students can independently select a listed calming strategy of their own or from the list if the opportunity presents itself.

We will be having our first Book Club on afternoon of Thursday, October 25th. This will include all of the grade 3 students. At this time, students will reflect on the first half of the novel (A Boy Called Bat) and engage in conversation with peers from other classes. We will be serving a beveridge and healthy snacks at this time. We would appreciate if any parents would be so kind in bringing in a snack for the students to enjoy while they have their discussion. Please be mindful that when selecting or making a snack that it has components of a healthy snack. Please let me know if you would like to bring in a snack and what type of snack, as I will try not to have duplicates. Thank you in advance.

We have now completed the review of all 20 bedrooms from around the world and how they reflect one’s quality of life. The engagement and level of verbal participation while having a group discussion was out of this world. Each day we spend at least 45 to 60 minutes on discussing the story of each bedroom and that of the child who sleeps there. I hope it was eye opening for the children and they understand just how lucky they are to be a citizen of Calgary, Alberta, and Canada. We then started working on a personal quality of life task, where students were to think of what makes them feel happy, healthy, comfortable, and safe. Students have started their task in their individual visual journals. This task will continue as we look into world geography.

Students now know all about Fibonacci and how it can be observed in several aspects of nature. We finished our look at this specific growing pattern by using our grid paper to show the Fibonacci spiral, that can also be seen in relation to our ear, snails, and hurricanes. It truly is amazing how this sequence is seen in nature on so many different levels. Students will now start to think of a unique way in which they can show their understanding of the sequence.

Upcoming Events…

*Thursday, October 25th - Book Club (afternoon)
*Friday, October 26th - Non-instructional Day (No School)
*Friday, November 2nd - FUN Snack
*Sunday, November 4th - Daylight Savings Time ends

It certainly feels more like fall this week. Enjoy your weekend!

We were too exhausted to write a blog today...and the bell just rung. We will update you tomorrow!!!!

We had a fantastic day at the National Music Centre. I believe that most students will sleep soundly tonight. I appreciate the one volunteer we had for our field study. However, it will be imperative we have more volunteers for our next adventure. Our next field study will take place in December and we will be heading to the Calgary Tower for the morning and an exploration of downtown in the afternoon. Thank you in advance for volunteering for this experience.

Please ensure your son/daughter brings their completed musical instrument tomorrow. We will be practicing for our assembly in the days to come.

Friday, October 12th

I hope you all had a great short work week due to the Thanksgiving long weekend. I have thoroughly enjoyed my many turkey sandwiches this week for lunch. If your child has not informed you yet about our overarching question for the year, it is…. What is the story, told and untold? We will be relating back to this question throughout the school year and connect all areas of the curriculum to it.

What learning took place this week?

Last week I introduced our BIG question with the work we have been doing with the sunflower. We discussed what is the TOLD story of the sunflower (what you visibile observe) and then proceeded to deconstruct the sunflower to determine the UNTOLD story. It was a wonderful introduction to the BIG question as well as to the concept of deconstruction. This week, the students and I have been working on connecting Numbers in Nature through Fibonacci’s work. Students understanding, and were wowed, to see how many elements of nature include numbers within the sequence. Not only did students investigate the growing pattern in plants/flowers but pinecones, fruits and vegetables. We will continue this work in the weeks to come.

We have now completed Chapters 1-8 of A Boy Called Bat. Students have been working on various comprehension responses to these chapters, as well as dialogue with peers. We have worked on creating #hashtag summaries for the first four chapters, shared likes/dislikes about the section, and made predictions on what events will take place next. We were also so lucky to do a Google chat with the students from Clay Centre, Kansas whom we have connected with. It was exciting to make this connection and we hope to do a video chat next week.

Quality of Life has been another focus this week. As a whole group, we have discussed one’s quality of life and what makes them feel happy, healthy, comfortable, and safe/secure. We have just started looking at various bedrooms of children living in various parts of the world to compare/contrast the quality of life, and how the students in Room 7’s quality may differ than others. We have just begun this task but the engagement of the students I have observed thus far has been fascinating. I am looking forward to seeing what the weeks to come bring.

Instrument building and has been our focus this week. Students were given a tour of the iLab, gathered the necessary resources for their project, and completed a detailed iLab plan. Construction is well underway and will be completed early next week in preparation for the assembly on Friday. Students were asked to construct an instrument that would incorporate the responses to the following questions:

How can you increase the volume of your musical instrument?
How can you change the pitch of your musical instrument?
How does this affect the vibrations or frequency of your musical
instrument?

Upcoming Events:

*Monday, October 15th - National Music Centre, Studio Bell Field Study
*Friday, October 19th - Grade 3 Assembly at 11:00am
*Friday, October 26th - Non-Instructional Day (No School)

The weekend looks like a good one so get out and enjoy the sunshine. Once again, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns.
